about

Cantus tintinnabulorum (Latin for “Song of the bells”) was originally created in 2013 for loudspeaker reproduction in the cathedral of Turku, Finland, as a pre-recorded piece.

The bells of the cathedral obviously have a leading role here. There are eight bells in total in the bell tower, and six of them were recorded for this piece. In addition to minor adjustments to the tuning of the recorded bells (to match the rest of the music), some bells were also artificially transposed down by one octave to provide further variation. Another special effect that is heard is an artificial “stretching” of the bell sound, which in effect mimics what the bells would sound like if they could be bowed. A normal bow for a violin, cello or even double bass would be too small for this, however.

Since the piece was originally intended to create an atmosphere without constantly dominating, it also has several quiet moments bordering on silence.

Further instrumentation in addition to the bells: Haken Continuum synthesizers, Native Instruments Reaktor (used as a sampler and for granular resynthesis).
