about

Inspired by the expressiveness of the Haken Continuum synthesizer, a target was set to create a piece that would go to the extreme of using just one and the same note from beginning to end, but making this note as musically expressive as possible. Hence the title, which means “stationary change” in Latin. The piece itself was mainly improvised, playing the same single note in two adjacent octaves.

Of all the custom patches that were created for the purposes of this album, the one used here is probably the most expressive. It reacts to most of the possible parameters of finger movement on the playing surface of the instrument, morphing its character between various percussive sounds and something reminiscent of a didgeridoo. It also includes quite a bit of interaction between simultaneously sounding pitches, which is very common in many acoustic instruments.
